SUBSET is an British alternative rock band from Dunstable & London, UK whose releases include fast tempos, post-powerpop and grunge, and ‘fuzz-drunk’ musicianship that placed them as one of the founding members of the 3-Counties underground rock scene of the 2010’s including Rusty G’s, Dead Cells, Dutch Order and As Day Light Dies. The band had a collaboration with producers Simon Trough (Soup Studios), Mark William (Willesden Green Studios) and sound engineer Matteo Di Cugnio who produced the band’s first eponymous EP in Dec 2009. Since 2010, SUBSET is now produced by Benoit Pouzol aka Zool at Le Chevre Studio.
The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim with its second EP ‘Mahogany’ (2010) which got them subsequently signed to US label Expat.Records, California in dec 2010. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in faster shorter songs that appealed to the grunge, punk, alt-rock, garage and lo-fi scenes.
SUBSET has released 3 studio EPs and 4 singles, plus 6 music videos and 6 live videos. The band's second EP ‘Mahogany’ (2010) has sold 1000 copies in the UK and US. SUBSET is the only signed band of the 3-Counties underground alt.rock scene in the Luton area.
The band started off in 2009 with no money and resources, did their first tour in 2010 without a van using public transports and carrying their equipment in buses. The same year they raised enough money online to enter the Soup Studio in Bricklane in London to record their first EP. Simon Trough (Let’s Wrestle, Screaming Tea Party, Stolen Recordings) helped the band produce the first tracks. In 2011 they reached the final stage of the Surfaced Unsigned competition overtaking 110 other bands. A video of their struggle during the competition got leaked out on the web, attracting US record label Expat Records’ interests. In summer 2011, the band hire out a secretive rehearsal space hidden in central London: this becomes their FuzzCave. In Autumn the same year, SUBSET get signed by Expat Records and release 2 EPs: ‘Mahogany’ and ‘Drenched’. The EPs received very positive reviews: . Feb 2012 the band travels to Los Angeles to develop contacts and industry links and prepare a PR campaign across Californian universities. By 2012 they released 20 songs in total, played over 120 gigs in the UK, contacted over 90 festivals to get live slots. 2012 summer SUBSET kicked off its ‘Underground Giants’ tour with 3 local bands while preparing their 4 th EP for winter of the same year. In 2013 the band relased a new 15 tracks album called LOVERDOSE and toured in the UK and France. Concluding the year with a successful crowdfunding campaign, the band is working on their first EU tour for 2014/15.
In early 2009 SUBSET would perform in illegal venues only as cautious start across the London live circuit. Subsequently the band was kicked off a squat pub in Elephant and Castle off Camberwell road after police closed the place for illegal laughing gas consumption and operating live music shows without licence. In summer 2010, SUBSET managed to sneak inside Glastonbury illegally to sells cider, makes pizza and play 2 acoustic songs on the Tin Village stage. The band members in the early days often faced difficult life conditions. As a result, SUBSET’s bassist and guitarist were kicked out of their accommodations due to excessive noise and unlicensed in house recording. Harsh initial financial situations meant the band often had to rehearse in free places or move around frequently with sometimes unexpected outcome. In 2010, the band’s equipment got trapped in a secret basement off Gray’s Inn road in central London after a drug seller was being caught by the police and the landlord for smuggling and hiding drugs in the band’s temporary rehearsal room. The band also was seen rehearsing in a church in Camden for money and isolation purposes. In 2011 they were spotted off Camden road carrying equipment towards a converted church. In early years the band gained a reputation for erratic and chaotic life stage performances, often climbing on stage structures and amps while playing. SUBSET also got known for their bizarre gig preparation techniques. In 2010 Romain and Jay revealed they used to play blindfolded to improve time coordination and reproduce live stage environment where “sound is so bad only the blind people could understand something” and “with terrible lightning so very often we couldn’t see anything at all.
Several band members suffered from live gig injuries and other related illness. In 2011, the band’s drummer got injured before a show at 93Feet East London on his left arm but decided to play a heavier set regardless, causing positive crowd surprise.
Rob Robertson suffered from haunting trauma after a motor bike crash years ago, with heavy brain damages and irremediable consequences on the former punker/biker’s guitar skills.
SUBSET can’t even afford having a van to go on their YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT BACK HOME tour so they’ll carry their equipment on their backs and using trolleys in public transports in London and across the 3 counties. Some said the tour title was inspired by their logistic problems,
SUBSET donates symbolic contribution to NGO SAVE THE CHILDREN despite sometimes difficult band finances for helping young children in Africa learn music as a way of escaping from suffering and family distress.
SUBSET’s audience escaped nearly lethal speakers accident at a gig in Northampton. The band furious behaviour on stage shook the PAs structure so much that a 10 feet tall speaker destabilised and fell on the side of the stage. Fortunately nobody was hurt.
The band prepared for 3rd round regional competition SURFACE UNSIGNED after successfully winning the first 2 rounds, playing in dodgy clubs in canning town in the middle of a metal scrapper industrial complex.
In 2014 the band was approached by several management and agency companies, released all their materials on Spotify and opened a new merchandising e-store, and recorded more songs. Plans are for 2015 to release a new album and go on tour again.
